Hello guys, today I want to share my personal interpretation of Sunny Hill’s Midnight Circus. My interpretation is about the whole MV from the teaser to the main Music Video and their concept.

From the first teaser with Ga-In and the second teaser with IU,people keep asking why they didn’t appear in the Music Video, and why the male member of Sunny Hill doesn’t appear much in the video, I think it’s because they palyed their role there.

First, Ga-In, I think she has a role of the ‘senior artist’ who already failed in the stage, so she has to accept what the ‘master’ done with her. So the teaser just showed a glanced of the memory. That’s why she didn’t appear on the video

Second, IU, Maybe her role is the commoner, like fans or viewers, she found something in the past. However she’s not part of the circus, so it’s clear why she didn’t appear in the main video

Another cast in the MV is Kikwang. He played his role as the crew behind the scene. Usually people forgotten them who work behind the scene. But the fact is they are as important as the artist who appear in front of the scene. In the video, Kikwang shows a worried expression and try to work hard to pull the ‘doll’ up. I thought, if behind the scene crew is not important, why they starred Kikwang for a few seconds appearance? Notice that he has different make up too from the music player which use white make up on their face.

Next is Janghyun, the puppet master. Many people who already watched the MV didn’t know that there is a male member in Sunny Hill. He is Janghyun. In the MV and the entire album, he shows his role as the master and leader. He doesn’t appear much in the video because he is the master, makes everything done well and eliminate they who can’t played well. It’s like YG eliminated Hyunseung before Big Bang’s debut or JYP removed Jay Park from 2PM, or the newest is NH Media replaced Kibum and Xander to AJ and Hoon. The master maybe feel bad to do it,but he has to do it without showing his expression.

Others, the girls of Sunny Hill play their role as group in the stage, they have to show their smile, but behind that they have to work hard to make everything done well. Sometimes they got forced by their master or company to perform better.

The last is The witness. It’s really hard to notice him!! Man with accordion and white make up, I thought he is the witness of everything happened in the circus. He always shown up but it’s hard to see him. I was curious because after the doll falled down, everyone vanished except the master and man with accordion and when the ‘doll’ was cut the camera shoot him longer than Kikwang. He is also the old man who appears in the MV’s intro wearing the suit.

Conclusion:

Midnight Circus is a perfect metaphor for korean entertainment industry. They send the message beautifully and enjoyable.
Overall message is to show to the viewers that being a star is not as easy as it looks. When they’re in the stage, they have to perform well to amuse the viewers. But I’m not agree with the lyrics “show must go on never dream” because you have to dream to achieve what you want.

ps: Once again I tell you that this is just a personal interpretation. It may be true or false,so just enjoy this

I was really confused when I saw the teaser and the mv.. I don’t get what it means but thanks for the interpretation. This really explains all

You really analyzed the characters and setting thoroughly. I agree with a lot of this. Thanks for making it clear for those who didn’t understand it fully.

i didnt kno the “witness” was also the old man....
