Hello, dear Ningin-ers!
I just watched the ‘prologue’ MV of EXO called What is Love. And all I felt was a huge disappointment.
First impression is the last impression they say. But, I really hope that my first impression of this new boy group will be changed soon. Because my first impression of them was not good at all.
Because of more than a dozen teasers, rumors, and so much fuss over their debut, I was very expectant. I waited for something extraordinary, something that would blow my mind and I’d say “Wow, SM did it one more time ( I meant after TVXQ, HOT, SNSD, SuJu, SHINee, F(X), CJSH, and many more), they got new generation artists!” But I was wrong.
The “prologue” MV was a fail, I think. No, I don’t mean that boys are horrible singers, I think quiet opposite actually: they sing well, and dance well. But, the song choice was not great. In the beginning it was really nice, but after first 20 seconds it got annoying. It had this one rhythm, one beat and was clearly similar to TVXQ’s Before u Go. And it just made me compare this two MV. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is not in favor if EXO: TVXQ are amazing artists, and EXO do not reach their level, yet maybe.
And while, Before U Go was almost like a short drama-movie, the What Is Love is like not finished pieces of MV thrown together. Each member had own story, but they had no beginnings, plot lines or endings. In Before U Go, Yunho and Changmin complement each other, but EXO boys don’t. They sound like one person-not in a good way. And, I wasn’t sure how many EXO members were actually singing in the MV. 1, 2, 6 or 12?
Here are the MV: See for yourselves.
The boys in What is Love are all separate. They don’t appear together, only one or two, or three at most at one time: and even then, only one of them is in the view, and others are blurred out or just stand there like a piece of furniture. I guess it was to distinguish them, show the boys separately and show what they were good at, like some of them singing, and some dancing. But, it made it look like many many different and SEPARATE artists clumped together.
Another thing why I think that EXO failed is that the first time I watched the MV, I got distracted, and the MV didn’t make want to re-watch it. But I did re-watch it - to compare with Before U Go. And the thing is that I wasn’t the only one who got distracted. On twitter, there were lots of people who said the same thing.
And the last, what annoyed me was that What Is Love is a “prologue.” It’s not even legit. It’s like, everyone was getting impatient with all the teasers of same members and SM decided to throw something at the audience to keep them busy while they tease some more.
So, yeah. A big disappointment. EXO did not reach my expectations. I’m still hoping though, for them to find a new song that will show their awesomeness.
What do you think? How was your reaction?
Thanks for reading!
